MASS Coalition Applauds Medicare LCD Cancellation; Calls on Medicare to Adjust Physician Fee Schedule

January 5, 2026 – The MASS Coalition celebrates today as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced the withdrawal of the Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs) against skin substitutes that would have gone into effect on January 1, 2026. This is a major win for patients with chronic wounds, as the LCDs would have put major limits on wound care therapies that prevent sepsis, amputation, and even death.

Unfortunately, the threat to these patients isn’t entirely eliminated, as the 2026 Physician Fee Schedule rule still went into effect on January 1, 2026. CMS’ decision to set very low payment reimbursement rates for these life-and-limb-saving products means physicians won’t be able to provide these treatments to their homebound and non-ambulatory patients, including those in rural and underserved areas. The MASS Coalition calls on CMS to adjust the 2026 Physician Fee Schedule rule to allow all patients with chronic wounds to get the care they need. Medicare should fight fraud by targeting bad actors, and not by punishing patients.
